ABV:: 4.80%

Appearance:: Yellow gold with a slight orange tone to it. It is also a fairly clear beer with a nice ½ inch layer of head with moderate retention.

Aroma:: Floral hop aroma with strong pine-like notes. Nice balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness and a small hint of fresh bread (really enjoyed that in the nose!)

Flavor:: Very similar to the smell. Great hop flavor balanced with some malt sweetness. Bready aroma translates into oats and grains in the taste. Not as bitter as other APAs and ends with some subtle fruit notes in the finish. Overall lots of tasty flavors in a very well brewed pale ale.

Mouthfeel:: Extremely crisp and creamy at the same time due to the creamy foam head followed by some well carbonated beer. Very light body with a dry finish leaving almost no rings of lace in the glass. Overall easy to drink.

What We Like

A wider variety of flavors compared to your standard APA.

What We Don't Like

This was my first time drinking this beer and it was cool learning that Pale 31 is homage to the great state of California. The 31 is representative of the fact that California was the 31st state of the union. I feel that this beer is a good ambassador for the state since we are known for our pale ales and IPAs. But this isn’t your typical APA. This beer has won a significant amount of Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, among others. It is also fermented in the renowned Firestone Union oak barrel system.

Now, something truly ironic out of all the medals this beer has won, a majority of which are gold and silver, is that one of its two bronze metals was won at the LA County Fair. I can just imagine their reactions when that happened, particularly since it was after they had already won multiple golds at the most prestigious beer competitions in previous years. And even more ironic is that they later went on to win gold at the California State Fair, the grand-daddy of them all. So as a Los Angeles native, I feel that it is my duty to apologize for the under-appreciation this beer was shown at our local fair. Maybe the judges were just really drunk that day…
